Yes, you can configure certain parts of your internet speed, but if your ISP is selling you 56kbs, then that's pretty much what you're going to get.See, the best way to deal with slow internet, and to get the most out of your connection, is to strip what you download down to the bare minimum.First, images. Images make the page look nice, but most of the time, they do nothing. If you want to get through a page without downloading 72 jpgs and maybe uncompressed PNGs, then you're better off just disabling image downloads.
This is easily done in Firefox. Tools -> Options -> Content tab -> Uncheck Load Images Automatically.Just remember that a few forums and sites require clickable images to work right, but the majority don't.Second, unneeded scripts. Anyone on a slow connection knows that any news site takes a unacceptable time to load. By disabling scripts on the page, it chops out the latest on Obama's speech, maybe the comments, and a flash interface. For disabling scripts and flash, I'd get the NoScript addon.
Lastly, ads. These take a long time to load at times, and some of them have tracking cookies, some link to scams and malicious software, some are just plain annoying.Something like AdBlock Plus will stomp them into the ground, but make sure to let sites with acceptable and legit ads get around it. They deserve the incomeIn short, you can't make your internet faster than it already is, but you can chop out what you don't need in order to get the best out of it.
